CHOONS AWARDS NIGHT! MALAYSIA'S First & Prestigious Dance Music Awards, CHOONS AWARDS 2009/2010, returns this year for its second outing with a new look, a host of more categories and a spread of wings into the Asia Pacific market. We can expect this to now be an annual affair, recognising the efforts of our national community of electronica music producers and DJ in pushing the boundaries and scope of the local clubbing industry with a producer of the year award and a host of DJ awards.
So successful was the inaugural Choons Awards (2008/2009) that initial plans for a compilation CD comprising music from the finalists expanded to finally releasing a special limited edition double CD due to the high quality of music produced, with Mr Fluff aka Bobo winning the producers awards in style.
This year, a total of 22 awards are up for grabs, a significant jump from last year’s inaugural 8, opening the door for more DJs, MCs and Live Acts to be recognised. The 14 new awards include Best DJ awards for trance, techno, Urban/R&B, turntablist and female, Best MC, two Best Club awards, Best Live hip hop act, two Best Bar/Pub awards , Best Radio Show and Best Scene Photographer.
In the local market, East Malaysia community will now join the party with three of the new awards introduced specifically targeted at Sabah and Sarawak.
The Producers Award, meanwhile, is now being expanded to allow entries from the rest of Asia, Australia and New Zealand, certainly a significant move in encouraging more globalisation from the Malaysian scene.
