Hip Hop King, DJ Goldfish. Setting an early pace he opened with some quick cuts and set an electro tempo with tracks like La Roux’s Bulletproof before moving into more radio friendly territory with a set of mid-paced floor-stompers that saw the early starters at Swedish Marquee move into a higher gear.
That prepped the stage perfectly for Singapore’s DJ Andrew T to take over the decks. One of the definitive Hip Hop DJs in South East Asia, Andrew T helms his own nights at Singapore’s Butter Factory as well as playing extensively throughout the region. “In KL they like their music fast and full on” quipped the Johnnie Walker® Black Label & water-sipping jock.
To get the crowd started on his epic trawl through Hip Hop’s back catalogue, Andrew launched with an old skool mix-up that included favourites like Notorious B.I.G.’s Mo Money, Mo Problems and the cheeky Thong Song from Sisqo. True to his word he revved the crowd and piloted them towards the high-energy set of The Black Circuit Lounge’s headliner, Australian superstar mixer, Havana Brown.
With a resumé that includes tours for Britney Spears and Black Eyed Peas, private parties for Paris Hilton and even the most star-studded of them all – the Grammys After Party – Havana Brown is one of the most in-demand DJs on the R&B circuit, and one with a rare pedigree: she’s met the artists whose music she plays. “The Grammys After Party was insane,” she explains. “To have the people who create that music in the room – people like [Michael Jackson producer] Quincy Jones – listening to you play is intimidating but exciting: Dr Dre even asked to meet me afterwards because he loved my set.”
Known for risk-taking tracks inspired by her hero DJ AM, she regularly sprinkles magic dust over her sets in the form of rock, House and electro cuts through the mix. The result is the kind of multi-angled party set that combines hands in the air sing-a-longs with grittier urban classics. “I love to mix it up with Hip Hop, up-tempo R&B and dance music. Then maybe some classic stuff and a little bit of rock. I like to surprise people. And with the elegant classy people in the Johnnie Walker Black Circuit Lounge tonight I think it’s going to be a great party.”
Along with floor fillers from Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, the green-eyed Havana – named after an exotic breed of cat – purred through the set, creating an arching, highly sprung mix that weaved House classics like the Robin S mantra ‘Show Me Love’ in out of the electro themed cuts to the delight of the heaving dance floor, even spinning in leftfield gems like Kings of Leon and creating the night’s definitive hands-in-air-moment with a housed up version of Guns N Roses Sweet Child of Mine.
